Hapa-zome: Eco-dyeing with Plants and a Hammer

August 29, 2011

Beating color onto cloth is an age-old technique, and one which India Flint has coined Hapa-zome in her book Eco-colour. It’s quite simple, really. All you have to do is smash plant materials (flowers and leaves) on fabric with a hammer or a rubber mallet to create an imprint. The results are amazing! (If you want your dyed fabric to be washable, I read that you can steam iron it to set the imprints.)

This technique makes for a really good children’s art project. Rinoa did some smashing with me and I will share our experience with you on Friday.
