The past month or so, I’ve been working on creating more junk journals in between my other projects. This week, I’ve gone full blast – working on signatures and covers and taking over the dining table in the process.
This journal I just finished has a magnetic enclosure and the cover is made of stiff, padded board enclosed in a satin-like fabric and burnt book pages under an embroidered organza. The satin-like fabric (which I’m not exactly sure what it is) is from a bedding collection I bought in Linens-n-Things when they were closing a few years ago. It’s very nice material but apparently not very comfortable for sleeping. So here I am repurposing it.
I chose to bind my signatures to the cover using long cross-stitches. And I’m really happy with how it turned out.
Go here to see a sampling of the pages.

I love your journal. I am in this class too and love it. I love how you changed out the closure. Way too cool. When I made mine, I used a chain. You did such a great job on this and it just shows how many possibilities there are in making them.
Very cool. Most of my journals are spiral notebooks from Big Lots. Cheap and they work – not exactly classy, tho. One of these days…
Hi Johwey,
Love your journal! I keep saying I should pile up all my pieces of fabric, ribbon, thread, stamps, ink, charms, chain (the list could go on and on) and use all the left overs to make an art journal. Now that would be a fun gathering to have everyone bring their “leftovers” and everyone could take from the pile and it would seem like all new stuff!
Your pictures reminded me of that plan. One of these days I will have to make it happen.
How are you liking “Flying Lessons”? I am getting a lot out of the content but there is so much to keep up with if I read all the comments, I didn’t expect that. However, I think one of the best features of the class is meeting others with the same line of thought and not so far away! I am in St. Paul and I saw that you are in Chicago. Only have been there once but we plan to go back for a longer visit – lots to see and do.
talk to you later,
Jodi
Beautiful journal. can’t wait to take a peek inside when you share some pages. Love the harlequin stitching on the binding!
Your journal is just lovely! You’ve inspired me to attempt another ROD. I’m not overly pleased with my first one. It’s OK but doesn’t really speak to me. It seems the RODers that make multiple journals seem to find their own style. I’ll need to try again. Thanks for showing us your beautiful work.
This book is beautiful. I love every bit of it. Your long stitches on the spine is amazing. You must have tremendous patience.
Thank you so much for inspiring us.
Love the binding stitching and what a tempting peek at your pages. I look forward to viewing them. I hope you will post a link to your Etsy shop as I do not see it on the sidebar.

I am in the ROD class too and your binding is AMAZING! OMG! I love it, such inspiration! Thank you.!
What a beautiful journal. You have done such a wonderful and very professional job!
Thanks for adding your link to the artist blog hop. I am looking forward to seeing more of your work.
Dearest Johwey, you make the most wonderful journal i have ever seen! I am a huge fan of chibby chic and i really love the way you create these gorgeous and so inspiring pages. Eveything looks beautiful! Have a lovely merry happy day and love to you!
Hi Johwey, just wanted you to know that I really like your ROD Journal making style. The end with the diamond stitching is just fabulous. Would you tell me how to sew the signatures in that way? I’d really like to try it! (smile) I’ve made one journal so far, but still haven’t “loaded it up”. I don’t travel a lot, so I’ve been thinking of displaying one or more of my collections in it. I collect miniature shoe (replicas) and have a collection of little turtles from various places visited in the past, and also contributed by friends and family from their travels. Anyway, I think your journal is really great, magnetic closure and the embroidery also. Thanks for sharing it with us. CAn’t wait to see more of your work.
