Shabby Chic Art Journal – Nostalgia #1
Posted on | June 9, 2010 | 21 Comments
The past month or so, I’ve been working on creating more ‘junk’ journals in between my other projects. This week, I’ve gone full blast – working on the covers and taking over the dining table in the process. I grouped my signatures in themes and this one I just finished is the first of three in my Nostalgia series.

| This journal has a magnetic enclosure and the cover is made of stiff, padded board enclosed in a satin-like fabric and burnt book pages under an embroidered organza. The satin-like fabric (which I’m not exactly sure what it is) is from a bedding collection I bought in Linens-n-Things when they were closing a few years ago. It’s very nice material but apparently not very comfortable for sleeping. So here I am repurposing it. |

| I chose to bind my signatures to the cover using long cross-stitches. And I’m really happy with how it turned out. |

| The journal has 60 pages and here’s a peek at what’s inside. |
I made two of this journal – one to keep and one to be enjoyed by someone special. (Of course, the pages won’t be exactly the same.) It is for sale on Etsy here. Sold!

I love your journal. I am in this class too and love it. I love how you changed out the closure. Way too cool. When I made mine, I used a chain. You did such a great job on this and it just shows how many possibilities there are in making them.

Thanks so much Nancy. I opted for magnetic enclosures because I wanted the spine binding to show when the journal is kept on a bookshelf. :D
Works well too cos it’s so much fun to play with those magnets – very hypnotic – lol!

Very cool. Most of my journals are spiral notebooks from Big Lots. Cheap and they work – not exactly classy, tho. One of these days…

Haha! That’s alright Patty, it’s how you fill them up that matters, right? Although, making this type of journal is loads of fun and filling them up is even more fun because now you have a place to house those bits and pieces you collect everyday.

Hi Johwey,
Love your journal! I keep saying I should pile up all my pieces of fabric, ribbon, thread, stamps, ink, charms, chain (the list could go on and on) and use all the left overs to make an art journal. Now that would be a fun gathering to have everyone bring their “leftovers” and everyone could take from the pile and it would seem like all new stuff!
Your pictures reminded me of that plan. One of these days I will have to make it happen.
How are you liking “Flying Lessons”? I am getting a lot out of the content but there is so much to keep up with if I read all the comments, I didn’t expect that. However, I think one of the best features of the class is meeting others with the same line of thought and not so far away! I am in St. Paul and I saw that you are in Chicago. Only have been there once but we plan to go back for a longer visit – lots to see and do.
talk to you later,
Jodi

That’s a wondeful idea Jodi – to have a swapping party like how you described. I would surely love to attend one!

Beautiful journal. can’t wait to take a peek inside when you share some pages. Love the harlequin stitching on the binding!

The stitching – is that what it’s officially called or is it just because it’s got a diamond pattern? Either way, I now have a new name for it. :D

Your journal is just lovely! You’ve inspired me to attempt another ROD. I’m not overly pleased with my first one. It’s OK but doesn’t really speak to me. It seems the RODers that make multiple journals seem to find their own style. I’ll need to try again. Thanks for showing us your beautiful work.

Yeah, I think you’re right. In the process, you’ll be able to find your style. :D

This book is beautiful. I love every bit of it. Your long stitches on the spine is amazing. You must have tremendous patience.
Thank you so much for inspiring us.

Thanks for the wonderful comment Rita. It does require a bit of patience especially when you’re struggling with sewing multiple signatures at a time – lol! Hopefully I’ll find the most efficient way to sew it this way.

Hi Johwey, just wanted you to know that I really like your ROD Journal making style. The end with the diamond stitching is just fabulous. Would you tell me how to sew the signatures in that way? I’d really like to try it! (smile) I’ve made one journal so far, but still haven’t “loaded it up”. I don’t travel a lot, so I’ve been thinking of displaying one or more of my collections in it. I collect miniature shoe (replicas) and have a collection of little turtles from various places visited in the past, and also contributed by friends and family from their travels. Anyway, I think your journal is really great, magnetic closure and the embroidery also. Thanks for sharing it with us. CAn’t wait to see more of your work.

How adorable – a collection of miniature shoes! Do you have them posted somewhere? I’d love to see them. And I’m sure you’ll enjoy filling up your journal. What’s nice about it is you can’t mess it up – seriously. I’ve had several requests for a tutorial on that bookbinding – and I have that in my things to do. Will definitely post about that one!
And thanks for the wonderful comment. :D
